Regrets (college is not the only path)

I teach summer school each year to a group of awesome English language learners from all over the world. It’s a fun and rewarding gig, and I love teaching at such a diverse school with such polite and interesting students.

One of my favorite field trips we did with these students was visit a Coast Guard base in Grand Haven, Michigan. Within a few minutes of the tour, I was regretful that I didn’t join when I was 18-years-old.

I would’ve loved (but hated at the time) being forced to do boot camp and get into shape. I would’ve loved being forced to move every few years and see new parts of the country on the government’s dime.

I would’ve loved getting free training, free housing, free food, and free education. And mostly, I would’ve loved retiring at 38.

I would’ve also loved the camaraderie and being part of a team that has an important mission to perform. If you’re young and clueless about what to do with your life, check out the Coast Guard!
